Of the Sony VAIO E, S, T and Z series, the VAIO S Series comes with an awesome design and powerful features and has great configuration options. The 15-inch Sony VAIO S Series SVS1511AGXB is a likely alternative to the more premium, midsize laptops such as the MacBook Pro with Retina Display (15 inch). It is also identical to the Dell’s updated XPS 15, which is another thin 15-inch model but costs about $1,700.
Where it stands:
The VAIO S series certainly packs a whopper for a high-end laptop. It comes with a 1080 pixel display, discrete graphics and a Blu-ray drive and also has a Trusted Platform Module or TPM chip that is rarely found on consumer laptops. One may not exactly need the TPM chip, but it is something that your IT division or a techie might need. Sony has also added on some free apps and software that include Sound Forge, Acid and Vegas. These apps are all owned by Sony and are used for professional multimedia production. Hence, it is an awesome multimedia package that can also be used for gaming and is definitely a show-off laptop at a decent price.
The retail price of the Sony Vaio S Series SVS1511AGXB at the time of review (30th August, 2012) was $1,249.99. [Buy at Amazon]

It is made of aluminum and magnesium, making it rugged and lightweight. It’s reasonably thin and without the AC adapter, it weighs about 4.4 pounds. This makes it lighter than both the Dell XPS 15 and the HP Envy 6 Sleekbook and weighs almost the same as the MacBook Pro with Retina Display. It has a backlit keyboard that is common with almost all high-end laptops and the set-up is a bit inconvenient for a multimedia laptop. The touch pad is large with a matte surface. There is a click pad, but it leaves a lot to be desired as it sometimes fails to register taps and movement despite changing the sensitivity options.
What is it good for?
It has a 15.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and an awesome screen quality. This is ideal for high definition video and Blu-ray. The videos and images are super clear and the audio that comes from the stereo speakers is great, as it also has Dolby Home Theater software. This can be used for movies, music, and games. The Sony Vaio S Series SVS1511AGXB comes with the usual one year mail-in warranty and has a great customer service backup. Their support sites are easy to navigate although upgrades can be quite steep.
In short, this multimedia laptop from Sony is amazing and it is one of the few that can actually compete with Apple, both in marketing shrewdness as well as design. A few users also commented on the touch pad and felt it was finicky. However, most users felt that the 15-inch Sony VAIO S Series SVS1511AGXB is still somewhat a premium item that is caught in the middle, with the other costlier laptops out-performing it, and the cheaper ones catching up on design.
